Affiliated Cancer Hospital selected as one of the first co-built bases for science popularization of China

On May 25, 2019, the Seminar on Co-built Bases for Science Popularization of China sponsored by the Department of Science Popularization of China Association for Science and Technology and organized by Chinese Institute of Electronics was held at China Hall of Science and Technology.

At the meeting, the first 30 co-built bases for science popularization of China were inaugurated by the Department of Science Popularization. It is reported that in order to promote science popularization and information-based construction, China Association for Science and Technology launched construction of co-built bases for science popularization of China in 2018. More than 367 associations, societies, colleges and universities, scientific research institutions and medical institutions have submitted applications. After selection and expert review, a total of 30 organizations have been selected as the first co-built bases for science popularization of China , including 4 medical institutions. Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Chongqing University is the only selected organization in Chongqing.

In the discussion part, representatives from 6 co-built bases for science popularization of China, including Chinese Institute of Electronics, Chinese Stomatological Association, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, USTC Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies, Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Chongqing University and Jiangsu Science Communication Center exchanged their experience. Zhang Wei, deputy director of the Affiliated Cancer Hospital delivered a keynote speech titled “innovative and precise platform for science popularization, the foundation for building a cancer prevention system”.

 

In recent years, the Affiliated Cancer Hospital has combined the science popularization with the core tasks of the Hospital, and has made numerous efforts in building a large science popularization system shared by doctors and patients. It has also been constantly creating new science popularization ideas and service modes. In addition, a three-level science popularization promotion network comprising the hospital leading group, Division of Publicity and Education and correspondents of the divisions has been established. A mechanism of regular reporting, communication and coordination has also been established, so as to strengthen top-level design and organization leadership of the hospital with respect to health education. Affiliated Cancer Hospital has built up the publicity and education carrier platform named “official website, weibo, WeChat and other 6 accounts”, and has been selected as the Health Promotion Hospital of Chongqing, the Science Popularization Base of Chongqing, the academic consultant hospital of 2019 for China Health Science Popularization Program for Cancer Prevention, the National Demonstration Base for Health Management and the co-built base for science popularization of China; at the same time, it has set up an expert database of health education, through which experts may provide technical support and professional guide. In particular, two experts were selected as national chief experts in science communication; it has held the “principal event for Cancer Prevention Promotion Week of Chongqing”, “the principal event for World Cancer Day of Chongqing”, “Hope Charity Marathon of Chongqing” and other large-scale public benefit activities for more than 10 years. The purpose is to build a cancer knowledge popularization brand. Preliminary brand effect has been obtained across Chongqing. A number of lecturers with extraordinary professional standards and expression skills have been appointed by the Hospital to give themed lectures on health and provide free diagnosis services in communities, sub-districts, enterprises and public institutions and colleges and universities. A total of more than 500 such activities have been held by now. The Hospital has been actively exploring science popularization + internet activity mode and has launched the online science popularization platform. More than 200 experts have been called together to write the Series of Books for Popularization of Knowledge of Cancer Prevention, which is the first of its kind in Chongqing. There are 13 volumes, with a total of more than 700,000 characters. The books were finished within 2 years, and have been selected as outstanding science popularization books of Chongqing in 2018. It has launched an original program named Pangxiong Teaching Basic Science Knowledge. Science popularization messages are pushed on a weekly basis. A total of 121 original articles have been produced, involving 31 divisions and departments. The total views have reached 1 million. The total views through various platforms have topped 10 million. The articles have been published by various media including Chongqing Morning News, CQNews, Life Times, Health Times, and cq.qq.com for hundreds of times. A science popularization brand has thus initially taken shape. An encouraging atmosphere has been created, where science popularization is emphasized and implemented, laying a solid foundation for reform and development of the Hospital.
