IWAIS 2017 held by Chongqing University

The 17th International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures is held in Chongqing from September 25 to 29, 2017 in Chongqing. The Workshop is sponsored by the School of Electrical Engineering and National Key Lab for Power Transmission and Distribution Equipment and System Safety and New Technology of Chongqing University, and co-organized by China Electric Power Research Institute, Electric Power Technology Research Institute of China Southern Power Grid, China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, and the National Key Lab for Power Grid Disaster Prevention and Reduction (enterprises), with technical support provided by the Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, Press of High-voltage Technique Journal, and Chongqing Society of Electrical Engineering and other organizations and sponsorship of Chongqing Guanghuai Industrial Group. The honorary chairmen of the Workshop include Professor Masoud Farzaneh from the University of Quebec, an IET fellow, IEEE fellow and an academician of the Engineering Technology Institute and Canadian Academy of Engineering, Professor Chen Weijiang, a senior engineer, and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Li Liying, a senior engineer and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. The Workshop is chaired by Professor Jiang Xingliang from the School of Electrical Engineering of Chongqing University.

A total of 156 representatives have registered for the Workshop, and a total of 186 persons have participated in the Workshop. Wang Heqing, executive vice chairman and secretary of the Leading CPC Group of Chongqing Association for Science and Technology, delivers a keynote address at the Workshop. Vice President Liu Hanlong of Chongqing University is also present and delivers a speech. Professor Shu Lichun, a member of IAC Committee and the CPC Southwest University Committee, has also attended the Workshop. Professor Masoud Farzaneh, the founder of the IWAIS, gives an introduction to the development progress of the IWAIS at the Workshop, and speaks highly of the early-stage organization and preparation made for the Workshop.

On the morning of September 25, 2017, a brief opening ceremony is held. Considering the internationally leading achievements made in atmospheric icing of structures in recent years on the global stage, four experts have been invited to the Workshop to deliver keynote speeches. Those experts include Researcher Li Ming from China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, Gao Keli, a professor-level senior engineer from Electric Power Research Institute, Professor Hao Yanpeng from South China University of Technology and Professor Jiang Xingliang of Chongqing University. Masoud Farzaneh has particularly introduced the basic information the research findings obtained by the University  of Quebec in the electric transmission line anti-icing coating and the development progress. Professor Jiang Xingliang of Chongqing University delivers a proactive report titled “non-artificial intervention ad non-blackout ice damage prevention methods and its application prospect in the international grid icing disaster prevention”, providing information on the progress made in grid and the research findings and experience of Chongqing in this field in response to the form of extra-high voltage and intelligent grid development in China. The report of Jiang is highly appreciated by the attending representatives.

From the afternoon of September 25 to the afternoon of September 27, 2017, the Workshop is held in the form of two parallel sessions. The entire afternoon is reserved for posts and exhibitions. Both in the lectures and the posts, the attending representatives fully show the research progress in recent years with respect to icing model, monitoring, test, analysis and calculation in different fields such as power grid, wind power generation and airplane. Each representative has 15 minutes to deal with the lecture and 10 minutes to discuss with the audience and answer their questions. A highlighted feature of this Workshop is that it offers every registered representative an opportunity to display their research and findings.

Chongqing University takes the initiative to establish the outstanding paper selection system for this Workshop. After negotiation between the sponsors and High Voltage, an English journal, it has been determined that 15% of the papers represented at the Workshop would be chosen outstanding papers. Each selected paper will be awarded the outstanding paper certificate, and the qualified ones will be recommended to High Voltage. A reward of 500 US dollars is given to the authors of the outstanding papers. Furthermore, the certificate is issued for the first time in the history of IWAIS to the chairmen of the sessions, to encourage experts in this field from all over the world t o participate in the organization of the Workshop.

At the Special Meeting of IAC, IAC members highly appreciate the innovative measures taken for IWAIS 2017, and speak highly of the capacity, method, results, and efficiency of the Workshop as organized by the chairman and the secretariat and satisfaction of the attending representatives. It has been decided that the outstanding paper selection system will be carried onward and the experience in organization of IWAIS 2017 of Chongqing University and its enthusiasm about the Workshop should be taken as models.

After the paper representation and exhibition, the outstanding paper rewarding ceremony is held. Professor Masoud Farzaneh, Professor Jiang Xingliang and the representative of High Voltage present the winners with certificates and money reward. From the evening of September 27 to 29, organization is made for more than 50 experts and representatives from home and abroad to visit the Xuefengshan Test Base of Chongqing University. The experts and representatives have expressed their admiration for the base construction of Chongqing University, and spoken highly of the world leading achievements made by Chongqing  University utilizing the Base. In addition, they are amazed by the ability of Chongqing University to build up such a unique and characteristic Base. A number of foreign representatives have expressed their intention to cooperate with Chongqing University in scientific research, talent cultivation and achievement innovation, and pointed out that the natural condition and advanced equipment and facilities of the Base should be fully utilized to make breakthroughs in atmosphere icing of structure related fields, including power grid, wind power generation, solar power generation, ships and warships, aircraft and high-speed railway.
