CQU Signs MOU with Laurentian University

On October 26, 2017, Serge Demers, vice chancellor and academic dean of Laurentian University, Chris Mercer, assistant vice chancellor, and Liang Jin, the officer in charge of international student recruitment, visit Chongqing University. Liu Hanlong, vice president of Chongqing University, meets with the delegation and discusses with them about the cooperation between the two universities. Related responsible persons of the Office of International Cooperation and Communication, the Graduate School, the School of Mechanical Engineering, and the School of Resources and Environmental Science attend the meeting.

At the meeting, Liu Hanlong extends his sincere welcome to the delegation, and gives a brief introduction to basic information such as development history, talent cultivation, discipline construction and international communication of Chongqing University. Liu Hanlong states that the cooperation between the two universities was scarce, and expresses his hope that the two will try to gain further understanding of each other and carry forward the academic connection and communication between teachers of related schools of the two universities based on the understanding, and implement material cooperation projects in joint student cultivation, joint scientific research, and collaborative organization of academic seminars in related areas. Serge Demers approves of what Liu has said, and adds that Laurentian University has developed into a comprehensive research university after 58 years of endeavoring. Its mining specialty is well known all over the world, and is the ace discipline of the University. The University is numerous academic and scientific research projects in disciplinary areas such as mining engineering, mining science, geology, geoscience and environmental engineering, and possesses sufficient scientific research funding. Serge Demers expresses his hope to carry out student and teacher exchange and joint scientific research projects with Chongqing  University in such areas. Liu Li, vice dean of the School of Resources and Environmental Science, and Luo Yuanxin, vice dean of the School  of Mechanical Engineering, respectively give an introduction to their schools and the preferred cooperation modes and areas. After in-depth communication and amicable negotiation, the two reach an agreement to cooperate in the mining area and seek for cooperation opportunities with respect to student exchange, double-degree program, scholarship program and joint scientific research. At the end of the meeting, the representatives of the two universities sign the MOU.

The Laurentian University was founded in 1960, and is situated in Ontario. Courses are taught in English and French at the University. More than 170 specialized courses for the bachelor, master and doctor’s degrees, and students may choose to take on interdisciplinary study. At present, the students have about 10,000 undergraduates and postgraduates, nearly 1,000 teachers and staff members, including more than 400 professors. The University has schools like the School of Management, the School of Humanities, the School of Education, the School of Science, the School of Engineering, the School of Architecture, the School of Health, the Goodman School of Mining, the School of Geoscience and the Graduate School; 68 undergraduate programs with courses taught in English, and 26 graduate programs with courses taught in English. The University campus covers an area of 750 acres, and is surrounded by a golf course and 3 beautiful lakes. In 2017, Laurentian University ranks the 10th place among the universities in Canada .
