Annual Council Meeting of CQU-Betong Municipality Confucius Institute Held at CQU

On December 9, 2017, the Annual Council Meeting of CQU-Betong Municipality Confucius Institute is held at Chongqing University. Professor Liu Hanlong, vice president of Chongqing University and Chinese president of the Council of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute, is present at the Meeting. Mr. Rong Zhijiang, the Thai president of the Council and mayor of Betong Municipality, and all Council members from China and Thailand are also present.

 

Associate Professor Li Jing, director of the Management Office of Oversea Confucius Institutes of Chongqing University and vice dean of School of International Education (in charge of related work), presides over the Council Meeting.

 

Processor Liu Hanlong delivers a welcoming speech to Mr. Rong Zhijiang and his companions, and extends his gratitude towards the efforts made by the Thai Council members in running the Confucius Institute in 2017. As Chongqing University was lately included in “Double-First-Rate” University Construction Program and the construction China-Thailand High-speed Railway is about to commence, Vice President Liu Hanlong hopes that Betong Municipality Confucius Institute would continue to play a positive role and function as a platform for China-Thailand communication, and deepen the cooperation between the two countries.

Rong Zhijiang extends his sincere gratitude to Chongqing University for its substantial support given to Betong Municipality Confucius Institute. After that, he goes over together with the Council Members the contributions made by Betong Municipality Confucius Institute to Chinese learning of students in south Thailand since its founding in 2006. Rong Zhijiang introduces the latest cooperation between Betong Municipality Confucius Institute and local schools of Thailand and the institutions in China, and the development of Betong Municipality in recent years. The Betong Airport will be completed very soon and the rapid development of Betong Municipality in terms of municipal construction, foreign trade, tourism and catering will surely bring new development opportunities for Betong Municipality Confucius Institute. Mayor Rong Zhijiang hopes that in response to the “Belt and Road” Initiative, there will be deeper and closer cooperation with Chongqing University, thus benefiting development of various areas of China and Thailand .

 

Associate Professor Chen Wen, the Chinese president of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute, delivers a detailed report on the work of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute in 2017 in terms of Chinese teaching, cultural promotion, study in China, system building and management reform, foreign exchange and cooperation, financial conditions, news coverage, the 11th Anniversary and founding of the alumni association. On November 19, 2017, the 11th Anniversary of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute and the Founding Ceremony of Alumni Association were held, and many honored guests from Thailand and China got together and discussed future development of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute.

 

Members of the Council have offered their suggestions on further sustainable development of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute, and proposed that the teaching points should be expanded based on the existing Chinese teaching resources of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute. They all agree that Betong Municipality Confucius Institute should cultivate talents and build up cooperation platforms for Betong in areas such as economics and trading, infrastructure construction and catering. The Council has announced the members of the new Council and the time of the next Council Meeting. The Council Meeting is brought to an end in a joyful and amicable manner.

The Betong Municipality Confucius Institute was officially founded on December 28, 2006 in collaboration of the Betong Municipality Council. It is located in south Thailand , and is the only Confucius Institute co-established by a Chinese university and the municipal government of Thailand . It has 12 teaching points in Thailand scattered in south Thailand , and has formed a development mode featuring teaching and cultural activities. In 2017, Chongqing  University and Southern University of Thailand will collaborate to initiate the 3+1 Chinese Learning Education International Program utilizing existing resources of Betong Municipality Confucius Institute by setting up a branch of the Betong Municipality Confucius Institute under the Southern University, so as to transmit and study Chinese culture.
