International Workshop on Mountain Resources, Environment and Hazards in Pan Himalayan Region

Subsidized by National Natural Science Foundation, the “International Workshop on Mountain Resources, Environment and Hazards in Pan Himalayan Region” is being held at Chongqing University from November 26 to 29, 2018. The Workshop is organized by China Committee of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development and Chongqing University. Professor Guo Jinsong of Chongqing University, and Researcher Wu Yanhong from the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development co-chaired the Workshop.

The Workshop opened on the morning November 27. Before the opening ceremony, Zhou Xun, secretary of CPC CQU Committee, met with related officials and experts from the National Natural Science Foundation and Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, including Director Yang Junlin and Section Chief Zhang Yongtao of the Bureau of International Cooperation, Section Chief Luo Jing of the Department of Life Science, Chen Xi, project director of the Department of Earth Sciences, Researcher Wen Anbang, responsible person of China Committee of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development, and Section Chief Zhuang Yan and Researcher Dong Lin of the Bureau of International Cooperation. Zhou Xun extended his gratitude to the National Natural Science Foundation for allowing Chongqing University to organize this Workshop, and the two parties had discussion over further cooperation.

At 9:00am November 27, chaired by Section Chief Zhang Yongtao of the National Natural Science Foundation, the Workshop opened officially. Professor Hu Xuebin, a standing member of CPC CQU Committee, head of the Publicizing Department and deputy director of the Faculty of Built Environment, delivered a welcome speech. Professor Hu extended his welcome to the experts present at the Workshop, and gave a view of the current situation and history of Chongqing University.

Deputy Director Liang Zhen of Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau, Director Yang Junlin of the Bureau of International Cooperation of National Natural Science Foundation, and Section Chief Zhuang Yan of the Bureau of International Cooperation of Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively delivered a speech, and congratulated on opening of the Workshop.

 

Director David Molden of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development briefly covered the development history of the Center. As a research center engaged in global mountain research and knowledge innovation services co-established by 8 member states of Pan Himalayan Region, since its founding, it has been devoted to research, protection and comprehensive development of natural and biological resources of the Pan Himalayan Region, and improvement of the ecological environment and living conditions of local residents. This Workshop facilitates systematic and in-depth research of major science-related problems of Pan Himalayan Region and other mountain areas with respect to resources, environment, biological and ecological coupling evolution and disaster prevention and control, and also consolidates the leading role of China in research of mountain development and third-polar mountain science globally.

At the Workshop, experts from more than 10 scientific research institutions such as Lanzhou University, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography and Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Northwest Institute of Eco-environment and Resources and Yunnan University, and foreign experts made representations and delivered summary reports on progress in research of resources, environment and disasters in Pan Himalayan Region. In addition, heated discussion was conducted over key research areas in the 5 years to come. Attendants were all actively involved in the discussion by sharing their experiences and information.

In the last part, chaired by Professor Guo Jinsong from the School of Urban Construction and Environment Engineering of Chongqing University, the Workshop was brought to a successful end. Section Chief Zhang Yongtao of the National Natural Science Foundation and Director David Molden of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development delivered a speech, and extended their gratitude to Chongqing University and China Committee of International Center for Integrated Mountain Development that had organized this Workshop.
