CQU’s material science ranked among top 1‰ ESI disciplines

Clarivate (formerly known as Thomson Reuters) released the latest ESI statistics of the period from January 1, 2010 to June 30, 2020 (10 years and 6 months) on September 10, 2020. According to the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) statistics, Chongqing University’s material science is ranked among the top 1‰ ESI disciplines for the first time. To this point, Chongqing University has two top 1‰ ESI disciplines, i.e., engineering and material science. In addition, Chongqing University has 10 top 1% ESI disciplines, including engineering, material science, chemistry, physics, computer science, environmental science/ecology, biology and biochemistry, mathematics, clinical medicine, and plant and animal science.

The ESI ranking is based on total citations of papers published by each organization. According to the latest statistics, there are 6,745 organizations in the list, among which Chongqing University is ranked the 572nd place, 8 places higher than before. In the 961 organizations worldwide with material science ranking among the top 1% ESI disciplines, Chongqing University is ranked the 92nd place. Material science is another top 1‰ ESI discipline of Chongqing University after engineering, indicating steady development of material science of CQU.

The ESI statistics include SCIE and SSCI papers published in more than 12,000 academic journals in the past 10 years and their citations and are extensively representative. ESI statistics have been recognized worldwide. Those indicators are usually used to tell the scientific research level of a college or a university (or institutions), and the ESI citations are even used to predict Nobel Prize winners. In the “Double-First-Rate” construction, Chongqing University includes the number of top 1‰ and 1% ESI disciplines as one of its construction goals.
