CNRS Fellow Lyu Jian, vice chancellor of the City University of Hong Kong, arrived at Chongqing University for a visit upon invitation on October 28, 2018. Vice President Liu Hanlong of Chongqing University met with Lyu Jian.
CNRS Fellow Lyu Jian is a world well-known expert in materials. In 2011, he was elected as a fellow of Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) as the first Chinese fellow among the nearly 300 fellows of CNRS. He is also an academician of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 2017, Lyu Jian was awarded the Legion of Honor, which is the top-level national order issued by the French president. In 2018, he won the top award of China’s scientific and technological circles- the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize. By now, Lyu Jian has obtained 23 patents, and published more than 340 papers in top journals such as Nature, Science, Nature Materials, Materials Today, Advanced Materials and Nature Communications. His papers have been cited in SCI indexed papers for more than 10,000 times. In addition, Lyu Jian is now serving as the associate editor and editorial board member of more than 10 international reputable journals including Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letter.
During the visit, an appointment ceremony was held for CNRS Fellow Lyu Jian in the Minzhu Lake Lecture Hall, at which he was appointed as the “visiting professor of Chongqing University” and “editor in chief of the academic journal Nano Materials Science”. Hu Xuebin, a standing member of CPC CQU Committee and head of the Propaganda Department, presided over the appointment ceremony, and Vice President Liu Hanlong addressed the ceremony on behalf of the University and presented Lyu Jian with the letter of appointment. Liu extended his warm welcome to Lyu Jian and thanked him for getting involved in the “Double-First-Rate” construction of Chongqing University by accepting the appointment as a visiting professor and editor in chief of the journal. Liu added that with guide of Lyu Jian, the English academic journals of Chongqing University will see high-standard construction and high-level development, and an important platform for international exchange and talent cultivation will be built up to facilitate the “Double-First-Rate” construction, and to make further positive contributions to development of China’s nanometer material discipline.
After the appointment ceremony, Lyu Jian delivered an academic report titled “super-nano metal and 4D printing nano ceramics, the latest progress in nano-structural materials” to the teachers and students. The symposium was chaired by Hu Ning, dean of the School of Aerospace Engineering. Lyu Jian shared the latest academic achievements in areas such as organization structure and mechanical performance of nanometer and micro-scale materials, organization structure and mechanical performance of atoms and nano-scale materials, additive manufacturing and 4D printing ceramics and future development and application. When talking about the way to make influential creation and the key factors of successful research, Lyu pointed out that the young scholars and students should focus on the scientific nature of research and readability of papers, and should develop unique and independent ideas. He added that we should not be subjected to viewpoints of authority or carry out me-too researches, and that we should have a properly designed research scheme and stick to this scheme straight to the end to make original achievements. The entire lecture hall was crowded with interested audiences. More than 400 teachers and students were in the lecture hall and listened to the fascinating presentation made by Lyu Jian.
After the symposium, Lyu Jian attended a forum on development of Nano Materials Science held in Conference Room 506 of the Main Teaching Building. Yuan Wenquan, director of the Social Science Office and director of the Periodical Press, chaired the forum. Lyu Jian issued the letters of appointment to Zhang Yuxin as the executive associate editor of the journal, Hu Ning, Wei Zidong and Fu Shaoyun as the associate editors, and the editorial board member representatives, and listened to the report on progress in the journal related work. The representatives present at the forum had heated discussion about topics such as positioning, development characteristics, internationalization, contribution source quality, journal evaluation system, manuscript submission and review process, motivation of authors, promotion and publicizing of journals and website construction, and proposed a various valuable opinions and suggestions. Lyu Jian, after listening carefully to the comments of the attendants, pointed out that given the intense competition from the numerous high-standard journals in the nanometer material area, the top priority is to identify the positioning and highlights of our journal. The academic team of the editorial board should play a critical role and do something big in contribution, group approximation, review and publicizing. Lyu expressed his hope that everyone would work together and practice what they believe in, and get really devoted to construction of Nano Materials Science. He added that the development of the journal should be based on premium quality, and the journal running work and specific measures should be implemented properly, so as to fulfill the expected development goals of the journal and contribute to the “Double-First-Rate” construction of Chongqing University.
