On the afternoon of April 24, 2024, Mr. Joel Tan, Consul General of the Consulate General of Singapore in Chengdu, and Vice Consul Ms. Vivian Tay Hui Mun visited CQU. Mr. Wang Shuxin, President of CQU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Mr. Liu Hanlong, Executive Vice President of CQU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, had a meeting with the visiting delegation. The two sides exchanged views on educational exchanges and cooperation.
After expressing his warm welcome to the visit of Consul General Joel Tan, President Wang Shuxin made a brief introduction of CQU's operation history, disciplinary merits, scientific research strengths as well as CQU's efforts in international cooperation and exchanges. He pointed out that Chongqing plays a unique yet vital role in the country's regional development and opening-up pattern as it is an important strategic pivot for China Western Development program, situated at the junction of the Belt and Road and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and strategically positioned in the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin City Economic Circle, the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, and the high-quality developing Yangtze River Economic Belt. He noted that as a Chinese government-sponsored “double first-class” university located in the only municipality directly under the central government in western China, CQU is an unrivaled player in southwestern China. Given this, it is his hope that the Consulate General of Singapore in Chengdu could offer strong support to the exchanges and cooperation between Singaporean universities and universities in western China. At the same time, President Wang proposed concrete ideas to deepen the cooperation between CQU and related Singaporean universities in Chongqing.
Liu Hanlong indicated that CQU has established a long-term friendly partnership with National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and other Singaporean universities. Therefore, it is hoped that with the strong support of the Consulate General of Singapore in Chengdu, CQU would further push forward intensive and tangible cooperation between the two sides and promote the high-quality development of mutual educational exchanges and cooperation.
Mr. Joel Tan remarked that there is great potential for cooperation between Chongqing and Singapore. As Singapore's Consul-General in Chengdu, he would like to bring more opportunities for cooperation with Singapore to western China and to Chongqing. Given that next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative (CCI), it is hoped that by taking this opportunity, the two sides could further deepen their pragmatic cooperation and encourage more win-win outcomes.
Relevant responsible officers of CQU Office of International Affairs and College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering were present at the event.
