28th CPCC Held by Chongqing University

From July 30 to August 1, 2017, the 28th Chinese Process Control Conference is held at Chongqing. The Conference is sponsored by Chinese Association of Automation and undertaken by the School of Automation of CQU, and co-organized by the Editorial Department of Control Engineering, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Chongqing Sichuan Instrument Automation Co., Ltd. The Conference content includes modeling and control of industrial system, CPS and intelligent optimization manufacturing, industrial operation optimization of the process, industrial big data and cloud calculation, realization technology of the control system, safety and reliability of control system, and other key technological areas.

Chinese Process Control Conference (CPCC) is the series academic annual conference sponsored by the Technical Committee on Process Control under Chinese Association of Automation. It is the 28th conference of the series held at Xikou, Fenghua, Zhejiang, and the first conference was held in 1987 at the same place. The total number of participants has exceeded 8,000 persons, and it has become an important platform for academic exchange and technological experience exchange in the process control area of China, and it is playing a significant driving and leading role in teaching, scientific research and engineering application. Now it is one of the flagship conferences in China’s automation area.


The 28th Conference is held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of CPCC, and more than 500 experts and scholars at home and abroad participate in the Conference. The honored guests present include Professor Sun Youxian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Chai Tianyou, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Gui Weihua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Qian Feng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Xu Zongben, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Wu Qidi, former vice minister of the Ministry of Education, the responsible persons of the Department of Information and Science, National Natural Science Foundation and Chinese Association of Automation, and other well-known scholars in the control area. Professor Zhou Xuhong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and president of Chongqing University, and Professor Yang Dan, managing vice president of Chongqing University, are both present at the Conference. Professor Song Yongduan, dean of the School of Automation of CQU, and one of the first experts included in the “Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, presides over the opening ceremony of the Conference. Professor Chai Yi, vice dean of the School of Automation of CQU, acts as the chair of the Organizing Committee of the Conference.

In the welcoming address delivered by President Zhou Xuhong at the opening ceremony, President Zhou congratulates on the 30th anniversary of CPCC, and extends his gratitude towards the efforts and achievements made by the peers working in the process control area; Zhou also stresses the outstanding achievements that have been made in the process control area in response to the national strategic demand, and looks back on the contributions the automation discipline of CQU has made to the advancement of process control; Zhou expresses his hope that the process control will gain first mover advantages and persist with innovation and development in the new economy with in-depth integration of informationization and industrialization as the breakthrough. He at last wishes the Conference a complete success.

Professor Huang Biao, CAE Fellow and general chair of the Conference, delivers a speech on behalf of the Guiding Committee of the Conference, and welcomes the scholars present from home and abroad; at the same time, Professor Huang extends his appreciation to the support and contribution by the Chinese Association of Automation, the Guiding Committee of the Conference and the Program Committee to the 28th Conference. Huang acknowledges the important role the CPCC plays in promoting the academic exchange among experts, scholars, postgraduates and engineering designers in the process control area at home and abroad and advancing the theoretical and technological development of process control as an academic exchange platform.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Sun Youxian and Academician Chai Tianyou respectively deliver a speech in memory of the 30th anniversary of CPCC. In the speech titled Leading Development and Recreating Brilliance - Looking back on the 30-year History of CPCC, Academician Sun goes through the process of creation and exploration of the process control specialty 60 years ago; and summarizes the rapid development, exploitation and improvement in China’s process control area since reform and opening-up of China, and the gratifying outcomes obtained as to the knowledge system, talent team, technological breakthrough and application dissemination. Sun profoundly analyzes the close combination of theory, approach, technique and engineering application in China’s process control area, and the frequent interaction between colleges, universities, scientific research institutions and manufacturing enterprises, as well as the excellent traditions that promote the academic innovation of process control and technological advancement of industrial automation; He also mentions that under the instruction of President Xi, efforts will be made to stimulate intelligent optimization manufacturing and build up an intelligent control system with precise sensing, distributed intelligence, global optimization, automatic resource cooperation and active defense. Sun also expresses his expectations on the future development and prospects of process control.

Academician Chai Tianyou gives an introduction to the research outcomes obtained by Chinese scholars in areas such as theory and method of high dynamic performance control system design with comprehensive complicated industrial process, the detecting technology for difficult-to-test parameters in the complicated industrial process and production index prediction, monitoring, prediction and self-healing control of abnormal working conditions of industrial process, schedule optimization decision and multi-target dynamic optimization decision and control integration based on the current situation and demand of China’s process industry in his speech titled Leading Development of Process Control towards Automation - Process Control in China. At last, Chai goes through the future development direction, development target and key research tasks of China’s process control sector as proposed by Chinese scholars with the major demand for high efficiency and environmental protection of China’s process industry taken into consideration.

The Guiding Committee of the Conference presents the winners with the China Process Control Award, which is issued by the Technical Committee on Process Control to outstanding scholars and experts, and young technological talents with great potential in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the process control area and outstanding members in recognition of their comprehensive contributions to development of the Technical Committee on Process Control. There are three awards, including China Process Control Achievement Award, China Process Control Youth Technology Award and China Process Control Contribution Award. Those three awards have been given to Academician Gui Weihua of Central South University, Professor Zhao Jun of Dalian University of Technology and Professor Huang Chengzhi of Zhejiang University respectively.


The Forum in Memory of the 30th Anniversary of CPCC is also held as part of the Conference. At the Forum, Professor Wang Chenghong, vice chairman of Chinese Association of Automation, reads out the congratulatory letter from Chinese Association of Automation. Qin Yuwen, executive deputy director of the Department of Information Science of National Natural Science Foundation and Professor Wu Qidi, former vice minister of the Ministry of Education, respectively deliver a speech. Many a young experts and scholars express their opinions freely over the Forum and together they look back on the development history of CPCC and discuss the development vision and research directions of China’s process control.


On July 31, 2017, upon invitation of the Organizing Committee of CPCC, Professor Wayne Bequette from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute delivers a speech titled Automated Insulin Delivery for Type I Diabetes. Professor Wayne Bequette, in his speech, analyzes the impact of sports, food, sleeping and individual difference on the insulin automatic control system with respect to automatic control of the blood glucose level of Diabetes I patients, and proposes an insulin closed-loop control system and hypoglycemia intervening system based on MMPPC. Compared with the traditional open-loop insulin control system, this method has remarkably improved performance, which means that the exploration of automatic insulin closed-loop control system is of great practical significance.

Professor Xi Yugeng from Shanghai Jiaotong University delivers a speech titled Looking back on the History of Prediction Control and Its Application Extension, in which he goes through the development of prediction control in the past 40 years as to the algorithm theory, realization mode and application, and analyzes the demand in different application areas for prediction control. Prediction control is mainly used for the major industrial processes, including areas like city traffic network, key infrastructure, grid facility, power and electronics, intelligent buildings, automobiles, medical care, robots and moving bodies. It has now become a typical representative of advanced process control and is playing an important role in energy conservation and improvement of quality and yield.

The education themed seminar is held as part of the Conference. Professor Wu Gang from University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Bo Cuimei from Nanjing University of Technology, Professor Chen Xin from China University of Geosciences and Professor Wang Ping from Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications deliver speeches titled respectively “Teaching Reform of Basic Courses of Automation Specialty in the Era of Intelligent Manufacturing”, “Reform and Practice of Innovation Talent Cultivation Mode of Automation Specialty under New Engineering Background”, “Reform and Practice of Course System of Automation Specialty Catering the Demand for Innovation and Practice Talents in the New Period”, and “Reform and Construction of Course System of Automation Specialty Based on In-depth Integration of Industrialization and Informationization”. The Seminar includes more than 20 sub-seminars including modeling and control of industrial system, full-process integration control, intelligent grid, modeling and simulation of industrial process monitoring, industrial big data and cloud computation, operation and optimization of process industry, intelligent robot and intelligent system, control system realization technology and network control system and its application.

Academician Gui Weihua from Central South University delivers a speech at the closing ceremony, and extends his sincere gratitude to the officials, experts and scholars from different colleges, universities and research institutions present at the Conference, Professor Chai Yi from the School of Automation of CQU as the organizer of the Conference, and co-organizers such as Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Chongqing Sichuan Instrument Automation Co., Ltd. On behalf of the Technical Committee on Process Control of China, Gui points out that CPCC has now become a specialized academic community with modern discipline and international development, and is now playing a core role in the development of China’s process control area. Professor Liu Tao from Dalian University of Technology and Associate Professor Zheng Yi from Shanghai Jiaotong University both win the Academician Zhang Zhongjun Excellent Paper Award with their papers titled respectively Heating-up control with delay-free output prediction for industrial jacketed reactors and Distributed Prediction Control of Structure Self-organization of Large-scale Information Physical System. After the award presentation, the Handover Ceremony of CPCC is held. Professor Chai Yi, on behalf of the organizer of the Conference, Chongqing University, hands over the “Sunshine Cup” symbolizing CPCC to Professor Ding Jinliang, the representative of the next organizer of CPCC, Northeastern University. This marks the perfect closing of the 28th CPCC.

The 28th CPCC continues for 3 days, and the items included in the agenda have been finished in a satisfactory way. It functions as a top-grade academic communication platform for process control, and covers a variety of topics, and is closely related to the current hot issues. The Conference is divided into 4 plenary sessions, 7 themed sessions, and more than 20 sub-sessions. At the same time, the industry themed forum and education themed forum have been held. The “Big Data Seminar” has been held in collaboration with the Technical Committee on Big Data of Chinese Association of Automation, in an effort to expedite the R&D of advanced technology and talent cultivation in the process control area. At the Conference, participants are encouraged to express their opinions and discuss with each other from different aspects, so as to broaden their horizons, enhance friendship and inspire innovation. It has effectively contributed to the new ideas, approaches, techniques, concepts and outcomes with respect to development of control engineering and control science in China’s process control area.
