On the afternoon of May 7, 2019, Professor Zhong Guohui, Professor Ren Zhihao, Dr. He Haoxiang and Dr. Ke Ke from Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited the School of Civil Engineering, Chongqing University for academic exchange. The delegation attended a symposium held at First Lecture Hall of the Construction Engineering Building. Academician Zhou Xuhong, director of Research Center for Steel Structure Engineering, Professor Chen Youjia, head of the Civil Engineering Department of Pennsylvania State University, Professor Yang Qingshan, dean of the School of Civil Engineering of Chongqing University, Professor Yang Bo, deputy dean of the School of Civil Engineering, Chongqing University, and more than 10 teachers and more than 40 students from the School of Civil Engineering were also present at the event.

In the first half of the symposium, Professor Zhong Guohui and Dr. He Haoxiang respectively delivered a speech titled “Structural behaviour of high strength S690 steel and their welded sections” and “Experiment and numerical investigations into true stress strain characteristics of high strength S690 steels”. In their speech, they went briefly over the latest research progress their research teams had made in areas such as S690 steel welding mechanism, constitutive model and design philosophy. In the second half of the symposium, Professor Ren Zhihao and Dr. Ke Ke respectively delivered a speech titled “Innovative smart connections：application to earthquake resilient structures” and “Resilient steels equipped with energy dissipation bays and quantification of inelastic seismic demands”. In their speeches, they gave a view of the largest research progress their research teams had made in areas such as new-type memory alloy beam-column joints and high-strength energy consumption steel frame.

After the four applaudable academic speeches, Professor Wang Yuhang from the School of Civil Engineering introduced the honored guests and students present at the event to the Research Center for Steel Structure Engineering of Chongqing University, including its time of founding, development history, faculty, partners, research areas and projects.

At the closing ceremony, Academician Zhou Xuhong, director of the Research Center for Steel Structure Engineering, delivered a conclusion speech. Zhou spoke highly of the cutting-edge scientific research thoughts reflected in the high-standard reports and speeches delivered at the symposium, and pointed out that our research should be further refined and more systematic, and greater importance should be attached to basic researches and interdisciplinary research, so as to allow research to be more forward-looking.
