On the morning of April 16, 2021, Qu Jiuhui, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a foreign fellow of the National Academy of Engineering of the USA, an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, an outstanding fellow of International Water Association (IWA), and director of the Engineering Material Faculty of the National Natural Science Foundation (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University) arrived at the School of Environment and Ecology in Campus B, Chongqing University. During the visit, Qu delivered an academic lecture titled “innovation and breakthroughs in environmental science and technology-a number of issues to be concerned”. The lecture was chaired by He Qiang, dean of the School of Environment and Ecology, CQU. More than 400 participants, including representatives from the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology, Changjiang Shangyou Ecological Protection Group, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chongqing Municipal Research Institute of Design, and Chongqing Jiaotong University and students and teachers of the School of Environment and Ecology, were present at the event.
He Qiang thanked Academician Qu for the support and care he had given to the School of Environment and Ecology, and extended his warm welcome to Qu. After that, He gave an introduction to the work experience, scientific research areas and achievements of Academician Qu.
At the lecture, Qu stressed the Chinese goal of carbon neutrality proposed by President Xi Jinping in his important speech delivered at the general debate of the 75th UN General Assembly. Qu pointed out that the strategic goal of China in the development of the ecology and environment area was to achieve the basic improvement in ecological environment, and basically realize the Beautiful China. Qu specifically stressed that the overall idea about the development of environmental science and technology by the year of 2035 included overcoming shortfalls, exploring new paths, protecting health, deepening integration and prospering industries. After that, Qu put forward the strategic task system of the next stage.
The speech of Qu was centered on “innovation and breakthroughs of environmental science and technology”, and was rich in content and clear in thoughts. In his speech, Qu managed to explain profound theories in simple language. He went briefly over the environmental issues facing China at the present. Those issues included comprehensive control of environmental pollution, carbon neutrality and cyclic use of resources, environmental health and chemical and biological safety, global environmental control and international performance, as well as basic research and disruptive technology from o to 1. Qu elaborated on those issues one by one, and put forward ideas to solve them from a disruptive perspective. After that, he shared his new thoughts on the theory of environmental science and technical innovation, and his expectations on the future of environmental research and technology.
After the lecture, Academician answered questions raised by teachers and students present at the event. At the end of the event, He delivered a summary speech. This lecture did not only arouse the students’ interest in learning, but also benefited them a lot by broadening their horizon and expanding their way of thinking.
