Three ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Education released the list of colleges and universities and disciplines under the “Double-First-Rate” Construction Program of the second round on February 14, 2022. Chongqing University and its 3 disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering, are among the list.
It is reported that the inclusion of the 3 disciplines of Chongqing University will bring the overall disciplinary level of CQU to a higher level.
The mechanical engineering discipline of Chongqing University was established in 1935 and has a long history. It is one of the first first-level key disciplines of China, a first-level discipline doctoral degree program and the center for post-doctoral studies. Furthermore, it is also a key discipline with special construction interest under the “Project 211” and “Project 985”, and has the State Key Laboratory of mechanical Transmissions.
By now, the mechanical engineering discipline is among the best 5% disciplines in China according to the Best Chinese Universities Ranking. Based on the achievements already made in the construction of the advanced manufacturing discipline group in the first round, mechanical engineering will target at the new challenges in the field of equipment transmission as part of the national air-land-sea-space strategy and major need of the country in the intelligent equipment field, with front-line discipline, inter-disciplinary development and national strategic needs as the guide. The goal is to solve “bottleneck” problems such as high-reliability and long-service-life key basic parts under extreme service conditions like extremely low and high temperature, high vacuum, intense radiation, ultimate load and intense turbulence. The focus will be on the extreme transmission and intelligent transmission of key equipment of China. The ultimate purpose is to enhance the status and strength of mechanical engineering discipline in the construction of strategic scientific and technological power of China, and build a first-rate nurturing system of innovative talents of a country with remarkable manufacturing power that features patriotism, international horizon and high engineering quality.
The electrical engineering discipline of Chongqing University has profound deposits and significant influence at home and abroad in fields such as power system and its automation, high-voltage transmission and insulation technology, power electronics and power transmission, motor and power system equipment, electrical theory and new technology.
Based on the construction achievements of the intelligent energy discipline group in the first round, electrical engineering discipline will make efforts to foster in-depth integration of related disciplines, and actively respond to the international “carbon neutral” initiative and “carbon neutral and peak carbon dioxide emissions” strategy of China. By doing so, it’s going to consolidate the leading position of electrical engineering in power security under extreme conditions, clean energy power conversion and equipment, safe and efficient operation of new power systems with the new energy system construction and reform of the energy supply side of China as the focus, in an effort to achieve major breakthrough “from 0 to 1”, and build advantageous areas under the electrical engineering discipline, such as natural disaster prevention of power equipment, reliability of power and energy, and intelligence of power equipment, into world-first-rate ones.
In the “Double-First-Rate” construction of the first round, the civil engineering discipline of Chongqing University has fully followed the education policy of the CPC, stuck to the socialist orientation in school running and fulfilling its basic mission to strengthen moral education and cultivate people toward the goal of becoming a world-first-rate discipline. The overall achievements have been significant. In the Best Chinese Universities Ranking released in September 2021, civil engineering discipline is at the 5th place. It boasts solid and substantial disciplinary foundation and extensive academic influence at home and abroad in areas like high-performance structural system, bridge engineering and mountain roads, special geotechnical mechanics and mountain geotechnical engineering, engineering dynamic disaster and safety prevention and control, intelligent construction and operation and maintenance, and building environment and green construction.
Based on the achievements made in the construction of the new-type urbanization discipline group in the first round, civil engineering discipline will lay its emphasis on the new-type urbanization and major infrastructure construction system, foster inter-disciplinary development, stimulate disciplinary vitality and cultivate new growth points of the discipline with safety and intellectual development of construction of mountain cities as highlights.
Further efforts will be made to build a high-standard international cooperation network, undertake major international cooperation projects, and attract internationally renowned scholars, significantly improve the international level of talent training, so as to allow civil engineering to play a more prominent role in supporting major national projects, further increase international influence and lead the development direction of civil engineering in the world.
