The Ministry of Education announced the results of registration, review and approval of undergraduate programs of colleges and universities in 2021 the other day. The four undergraduate programs declared by Chongqing University have all been approved. They are intelligent manufacturing engineering, intelligent mining engineering, carbon storage science and engineering and clinical medicine.
Intelligent manufacturing engineering and intelligent mining engineering are new engineering programs. Their application and construction are both based on the national first-level programs of Chongqing University, including machinery manufacturing and its automation and mining engineering, and achievements already made by Chongqing University in its new engineering construction, and focus on transformation and upgrading of traditional programs, so as to consolidate its advantages and leading role in the discipline and specialty field.
The carbon storage science and engineering is an off-catalogue program jointly declared by Chongqing University in collaboration with China University of Geosciences, China University of Petroleum and China University of Mining and Technology. It is the first off-catalogue program declared by Chongqing University ever. “Carbon neutral” and “peak carbon dioxide emissions” are the major strategic goals of China. Carbon storage is one of the important approaches to implementation of “carbon neutral” and “peak carbon dioxide emissions”. High-end talents with profound theoretical foundation and practical ability are urgently needed in a number of links related to “carbon neutral” and “peak carbon dioxide emissions”, such as carbon capture, carbon sequestration, carbon utilization. As such, it is a major need for sound development of national economy to expedite nurturing of talents in the carbon storage area. Chongqing University is now working hard to become a pioneer in cultivation of talents in “carbon neutral” and “peak carbon dioxide emissions” drawing on its solid foundation and advantages in related areas.
The launch of the clinical medicine program indicates that Chongqing University is again undertaking the cultivation of undergraduate talents in medicine. Since its founding in 1929, Chongqing University has been devoted to building a world-first-rate comprehensive research university. In 1946, the Medicine School of Chongqing University was established by Mr. Chen Zhiqian, “father of public health of China”. Teachers of the School included Chen Zhiqian, Xie Xizhen and other renowned medical experts. The School made considerable contributions to the development of China’s healthcare industry. In 1952, due to the nationwide shake-up of schools and departments, the Medicine School of Chongqing University was incorporated into Chinese Western Concord University (the now West China Medical Center, Sichuan University). After that, there had been no medical program of Chongqing University until June 2018. In June 2019, the Faculty of Medicine of Chongqing University was established, and since then Chongqing University has been making all-out efforts to support its construction. By now, Chongqing University has 5 directly affiliated hospitals and affiliated center hospitals including Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, Three Gorges Hospital, Fuling Hospital, Jiangjin Hospital and Qianjiang Hospital. The clinical medicine program approved to be established this time brought Chongqing University closer toward its “medical dream” and allows it to further contribute to Health China.
In recent years, to meet the economic-social development and serve the national major strategic needs, Chongqing University has been carrying out optimization, adjustment, upgrading and construction of disciplines taking into consideration its school-running positioning and talent nurturing goals. Since 2018, Chongqing University established 7 new engineering disciplines in succession including intelligent perception engineering, energy storage science and engineering, artificial intelligence, robot engineering, data science and big data technology, intelligent construction, intelligent medical engineering, as part of its move to consolidate the engineering advantages of Chongqing University; it has also established the basic discipline professional chemistry to consolidate its science foundation. Besides, Chongqing University canceled 10 disciplines with poor foundation that were inconsistent with its school-running position, including finance, politics and administration, applied psychology, material physics, metal material engineering, inorganic non-metallic material engineering, geological engineering, human resource management, public utility management and tourism management. It did so in an effort to concentrate its resources on construction of advantageous disciplines. In the future, Chongqing University will carry out comprehensive discipline evaluation within the University, further improve the system and mechanism of disciplinary construction and management based on evaluation, and constantly increase its talent nurturing capacity and quality.
