Since 2021, Office of International Affairs & Office of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs has been working with the Graduate School to establish the "International Advanced School for Postgraduate Students (Online)". A number of schools have submitted project applications and participated. The School of Civil Engineering, taking into account of its disciplinary characteristics, organized mobilization and application in 2021, to meet the internationalization needs of students. Totally 13 courses have been approved, which will begin in 2021-2022. These courses cover areas including sustainable environment design, advanced wind engineering and etc., and will be attended by 285 students.
In autumn of 2021, 6 online courses have been offered, including Sustainable Environmental Design, Advanced Wind Engineering, Structural Random Vibration, Excavation and Earth Retaining Systems, Building Simulation and Practice and Geotechnical Big Data and Reliability. Other courses are expected to begin in succession in 2022. Lecturers of the courses include reputable professors from Imperial College of Technology, Illinois State University at Champagne, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, National University of Singapore and other world renowned universities. Totally 98% of them are world well-known researchers in related areas. Lectures to be delivered by world well-known scholars include the lecture titled Bluff Body Aerodynamics as part of the Advanced Wind Engineering course delivered by Professor Flay from University of Auckland; the lecture titled Sustainable Environment Design delivered by Professor Emmanuel Essah from the School of Meteorology, University of Reading and the lecture on foundation pit excavation and system support design delivered by Professor Anthony from Nanyang Technological University.
The International Advanced School for Postgraduate Students of the School of Civil Engineering has been well received by students for its internationalization characteristics and high academic standard. Take the Advanced Wind Engineering course that has been completed for example. Associate Professor Yan Bowen is responsible for the course, and the lecturers include more than 10 renowned professors from world famous universities including the University of Birmingham, University of Sydney, Australia, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The course content included fundamental knowledge and latest research progress of the wind engineering and wind energy areas. A total of 33 person-times participated in these courses. This course broadened international academic horizon of students and served as an effective platform for students to get knowledge of academic research frontier of the world. Responsible person of the course is always there to answer questions. Learning of innovation experiment methods and fundamental knowledge was carried out off line drawing on the wind tunnel experiment of Chongqing University. Besides, students were also given opportunities to practice so as to increase their interest in research and improve their skills, and lay a solid foundation to cultivate professional leading talents with international horizon in the future.
Advanced Wind Engineering
Professor Yang Qingshan of Chongqing University is presiding at the opening ceremony.
Professor Tamura of Chongqing University is delivering a lecture titled Most efficient observation of random fields: Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) or Damping for wind resistant design of buildings
Professor Hemida of the University of Birmingham is delivering a lecture titled Characteristics of Atmospheric Boundary
According to the comments on the International Advanced School from students, the courses delivered by world well-known professors did not only respond to the national need to cultivate high-quality research-oriented talents with international horizon, but also provided a platform for CQU students to learn about advanced theoretical knowledge and practical cases from over countries. This lecture delivering method did not only broaden students' horizon, but also allow them to get knowledge of frontier technology related to the course, and apply what is learnt to solving technical difficulties China is facing. These international academic courses are very useful for CQU students.
A wide range of courses are being offered as part of the International Advanced School of the School of Civil Engineering, which have greatly aroused the enthusiasm of students about scientific research, bring students closer to the international frontier and improve the international academic quality of students. In the future, the School of Civil Engineering will keep on with the courses, and continue its efforts in building international academic exchange platforms of higher quality, in an effort to cultivate new-generation postgraduate students.
