CQU's Mental Health Education and Counseling Center celebrates "International Day of Happiness"

On the evening of March 20, 2022, the "International Day of Happiness" theme activities, hosted by the Mental Health Education and Counseling Center and organized by the School of Energy and Power Engineering, were held on Tencent Meeting. Nearly 300 CQU students attended the event virtually. This is the first event of a series of event held as part of the 10th Psychological Culture Festival of Chongqing University. Hu Nan, a part-time counselor of the Mental Health Education and Counseling Center delivered a speech titled ''Stay happy and keep moving".

In the speech, Hu Nan described how a student of Chongqing University acted as Ultraman "Seven" during the fight against COVID-19 to show that the seemly ridiculous act would actually make people happy and relief their anxiety. Moreover, Hu told stories of Seligman, the father of positive psychology, and his five-year-old daughter to explain the related concepts and knowledge of positive psychology and view of happiness. Hu called upon the students to hold a positive attitude towards uncontrollable things in daily life, stop complaining and blaming, stay positive and energetic during the outbreak of the pandemic.

Hu analyzed and explained how we were expected to maintain a positive psychological state from five perspectives: attention and awareness, understanding and response, emotion, goals and habits, virtue and relationship, and guided the students to think about and understand the essence of happiness from a more positive perspective by sharing ideas abstracted from a book named "Flourish", doing interest tests, and analyzing student cases. In order to deepen students' understanding of happiness, Hu Nan showed the students an interview video clip of CQU students' response to "what do you think happiness is". In the video clip, most of the students believed that being happy means having "something to do", "someone to love", "something to look forward to" and "emotional support". On this basis, Ms. Hu advises the students to find their personal happiness through 5 approaches, including "positive emotion, adequate sense of devotion, desirable interpersonal relationship, meaning of life and life achievements", and showed them the specific methods and approaches by giving examples.

Hu also explained in details the undesirable mental states students might experience during the outbreak of the pandemic, and shared ideas as to how students could establish and maintain favorable perception, positive emotions, harmonious relationship with roommates, and effective learning ability.

After the speech, Hu interacted with students, and answered questions raised by students as to "what is Lozada ratio" and "why are social relations so important for us". Students also expressed their understanding of being happy. Some said that they worked as a volunteer in nucleic acid testing during the outbreak of the pandemic and felt satisfied and happy in this process. "And every day's another chance".
