On March 9, Clarivate released the latest ESI data of March 2023, covering a period from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2022. The Chemistry of Chongqing University enters the global top 1‰ for the first time, ranking the 170th in the world. So far, Chongqing University has three disciplines ranking the global top 1‰ in ESI, namely Engineering, Materials Science and Chemistry.
In recent years, according to the general idea of "strengthen engineering disciplines, consolidate science disciplines, rejuvenate arts disciplines, boost social disciplines, expand medical disciplines, improve information disciplines and promote interdisciplinary development", Chongqing University has built a first-rate discipline system with obvious characteristics and advantages, reasonable structure, mutual support and coordinated development, strengthened the construction of basic disciplines, further promoted the implementation of "Action Plan for Revitalizing Basic Arts Disciplines" and "Action Plan for Excellence in Basic Science Disciplines", vigorously carried out organized scientific research, and achieved remarkable results in discipline construction and improved international academic productivity and influence again.
At present, 12 disciplines of Chongqing University have entered the global top 1% in ESI, including Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Environment/Ecology, Earth Science, Mathematics, Clinical Medicine, Plant and Animal Science and General Social Science.
The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has adhered to the development concept of crossing and science and engineering and paying equal attention to foundation and application, and has greatly improved discipline level. Its "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Chemistry" are rated as the key first-class disciplines in Chongqing during the 14th Five-year Plan. In recent five years, it has published about 1,500 SCI papers and nearly 100 high-level academic papers in international high-level periodicals such as Nature, Nature Catalysis, Nature Materials, Nature Energy, Nature Communications, JACS, Angew and AIChE J. In the past three years, it has successively undertaken many scientific research projects of National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Science and Technology, Chongqing Science and Technology Committee and key enterprises and received a total of about RMB 120 million as scientific research funds and won more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards.
It is reported that ESI (Essential Science Indicators) is a quantitative analysis database established based on more than 12,000 kinds of academic periodicals, literature and records collected by the Web of Science (SCIE/SSCI) from the world and has become one of the important evaluation index tools widely used in the world to evaluate the international academic level and influence of universities, academic institutions and countries/regions. ESI divides the science into 22 disciplines. From the perspective of cite analysis, statistics and comparison are made to SCI and SSCI papers published by all universities and scientific research institutions in the past 10-11 years and their cites. The ESI data are updated every two months and institutions ranking the top 1% of the designated discipline according to the total cites of papers can be on the shortlist. The institutions ranking the global top 1‰ in ESI refer to the top 10% of the top 1% institutions rated by ESI from all over the world, which reflects the academic influence of institutional disciplines on a global scale to some extent.
