CQU's Professor Liu Hanlong wins Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Contribution

On July 10, 2023, the Science and Technology Innovation and Talent Work Conference of Chongqing was held. Representatives of the winners of the Science and Technology Award of Chongqing were presented with award certificates. Professor Liu Hanlong, Managing Vice President of Chongqing University, was given the Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Contribution.

Liu Hanlong has been engaged in teaching and scientific research of civil engineering for a long time and has made outstanding contributions to geotechnical and underground engineering theory research, technology development, and engineering applications. Liu has successively won 2 National Second Prizes for Technical Invention, 1 National Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, 6 provincial and ministerial first prizes for scientific and technological progress, 2 provincial first prizes for teaching achievement, and 3 China Patent Excellence Awards. Other honors and awards he has won include Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, the National Innovation Competition Award of the first year, Mao Yisheng Academic Award in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize, China Invention and Entrepreneurship Award and the title of an Outstanding Contributor to Chang'e 4 Mission. Liu is also one of China's highly cited scholars and is named in the World's Top 2% Scientists List.

Having carried out extensive research in the field of geotechnical and underground engineering and upholding the scientific spirit of pragmatism, and innovation, Liu Hanlong led his team to concentrate on basic research, focusing on key scientific and technological issues related to the foundation of national major infrastructure construction projects. The team also carried out prospective, high-level scientific research, and continuously promoted the transformation and application of scientific research results, so as to serve the high-quality development with high-level scientific and technological innovation.

Over the past more than 30 years, Liu Hanlong has been carrying out in-depth, systematic and innovative research on key scientific and technological issues related to settlement deformation, safety, and stability in national key projects such as expressways, high-speed railways, high slopes, high earth-rock dams, land reclamation, and construction on islands and reefs. Liu has made outstanding achievements in areas such as technological innovation and promotion of composite foundation theory and technology in pile soil friction enhancement mechanism, reinforcement theory and technology for positive and negative-pressure coupling of soft soil foundation, liquefaction deformation theory and technology for sand and coral reef sand foundation, static and dynamic constitutive theory and reinforcement technology for coarse-grained soil.

The related achievements are widely applied in national key projects including expressways, high-speed railways, high slopes, high earth-rock dams, land reclamation, and construction on islands and reefs, and in the construction of infrastructures in countries along the "Belt and Road", resulting in significant technical and economic benefits and social benefits. The achievements are also being promoted in Chongqing, including high slopes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, the ecological side slopes of Chongqing Science Avenue, the foundation treatment of Chongqing Kaijiang-Liangping Expressway, and the projection of Dazu Rock Carvings. Furthermore, Liu provided advice on important decisions for the planning and site selection of Chongqingdong Railway Station, the geological disaster emergency rescue strategy of Chongqing, etc. Some of his theoretical and technological achievements are incorporated into the national, industrial and municipal technical standards or special technical standards, contributing to the scientific and technological progress of China and Chongqing's civil engineering sector.
