On November 22, 2023, the list of co-opted academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) was officially announced, with 59 academicians for CAS and 74 academicians for CAE. The most noteworthy is the election of professor Liu Hanlong of Chongqing University as a CAE academician.

Professor Liu Hanlong was born in March 1964. Now, he serves as a member of Standing Committee of the Party Committee and the Managing Vice President of Chongqing University and also works as the editor-in-chief of Biogeotechnics and Journal of Civil and Environmental Engineering (both Chinese and English versions). This time he was elected as an academician of the CAE Department of Civil Engineering, Water Conservancy and Architecture.

Professor Liu Hanlong has been committed to scientific research and personnel training in the fields of soft foundation reinforcement and pile foundation engineering, environmental geotechnical mechanics and disaster prevention and mitigation engineering. He has published 326 high-level papers such as SCI and 12 highly cited ESI papers, with an H index of 59. Since 2019, he has been elected as a highly cited scholar of China by Elsevier for 4 consecutive years, and in 2023, he was included in the list of the Highly Cited Researchers of Clarivate. He has won 132 national invention patents and 7 software copyrights. He has also published 5 monographs either in Chinese or English and completed 7 national and industrial standards as the editor-in-chief. Furthermore, he has successively won 2 second prizes in National Award for Technological Invention, 1 second prizes in National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress and 2 second prizes in National Award for Teaching Achievements. He was also granted the first National Innovation Competition Award, Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, Mao Yisheng Academic Award in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, DESAI Medal of ISSMGE, Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Contribution in Chongqing, etc.
