Mining and Metallurgy Discipline of Chongqing University, first founded in 1935, is one of the earliest mining and metallurgy disciplines set up in national colleges and universities. In 1953, Mining Engineering was established after national adjustment. It has been mainly serving the coal industry since then, and first conducted scientific researches of mine gas disaster prevention and control across the country, establishing its own unique theoretical system, such as outburst mechanism of coal , rock and gas as well as control theory and method. In 1978, the institute of engineering physics in mine engineering was established, focusing on the fundamental researches of coal mining engineering and applications.
In 2000, Key Laboratory Southwest Resource Exploitation and Environmental Disaster Control Engineering was approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2007, Mining Engineering of Chongqing university was certified to be a national key discipline. With the support of “Projects 211" and "Projects 985" based on the national science and technology innovation platform, a strong team was formed, having long been engaged in basic scientific and technologic researches on the coal mine disaster dynamics and control as well as engineering applications.
According to the three primary research fields of the MOE key laboratory, mineral resources exploitation and utilization engineering, geological disaster control and safety engineering, environmental pollution control and recycling respectively, four new research fields were further developed. With the innovative achievements in the advanced research of basic theory in Mining Engineering, the MOE key laboratory has become an important base across the country for cultivation of high-level talents in the field of coal mine disaster dynamics and control.
In 2011, State Key Laboratory of Coal Mine Disaster Dynamics and Control was conferred by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It has 60 fixed researchers, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 chief scientists of 973-Projects, 2 winners of National special support program for high-level talents, 1 winners of National 1000-Plan, 4 winners of the millions candidates from New Century Talents Project, 7 excellent talents of the Ministry of Education in new century, 44 professors, 13 associate professors, among which 59 research fellows have PhD degree.
