On the afternoon of October 16, 2017, Professor Ahsan Kareem, the current chairman of International Associations for Wind Engineering, and a member of National Academy of Engineering of the USA, is appointed by Chongqing University as a full-time professor of the School of Civil Engineering. The appointment ceremony is held in the Academic Reporting Hall on the second floor of Architectural Engineering Pavilion of the School of Civil Engineering, CQU. Liu Hanlong, vice president of CQU, Yang Qingshan, dean of the School of Civil Engineering, Professor Yukio Tamura of CQU, Professor Theodore Stathopoulos, a fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, Professor Kishor Metha, a member of NAE, and Professor Chen Xinzhong from Texas Tech University and other officials and experts are present at the ceremony.
The ceremony is chaired by Yang Qingshan, dean of the School of Civil Engineering. Yang in the beginning delivers a welcome speech, and goes over the friendship and past cooperation and exchange between CQU and Professor Ahsan Kareem, and congratulates on the appointment of Professor Ahsan Kareem as a visiting professor of the School. Liu Hanlong extends his gratitude to Professor Ahsan Kareem for the cooperation and exchange with CQU in the past, and expresses his hope that Professor Ahsan Kareem will make contribution to building of CQU. After that, Liu presents Professor Ahsan Kareem with a letter of appointment.
Professor Ahsan Kareem gives an inaugural address, and expresses his gratitude for the trust placed by the School of Civil Engineering on him. He goes over the cooperation with the School in the past, and promises to enhance the cooperation with students and teachers of the School in the future.
After the ceremony ends, Professor Ahsan Kareem delivers two academic reports titled respectively “Numerical simulation of wind effect” and “New work for wind load effects on structures: Non-synoptic winds”.
Bio of Professor Ahsan Kareem
Ahsan Kareem is the Robert M. Moran Professor of Engineering and the Director of the NatHaz Modeling Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. He is elected President of the International Association for Wind Engineering (IAWE). He has been awarded numerous honors, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the White House Office of Science and Technology. A recipient of ASCE’s: Masanobu Shinozuka Medal, Theodore von Karman Medal, James Croes Medal, Robert H. Scanlan Medal and Jack E. Cermak Medal and State-of-the-Art Award, inducted to the Offshore Technology Conference Hall of Fame and Distinguished Member of ASCE; Alan G. Davenport Medal of IAWE; Distinguished Research Award of IASSAR (Int’l Assoc. for Structural. Safety and Reliability); the University of Notre Dame. He has served as a High-End Foreign Expert at Tongji University and delivered 2013 Scruton Lecturer at the Institute of Civil Engineers, London, UK. He has been appointed Honorary Professor at several universities overseas, serves on the Editorial Board of several international journals including Engineering by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and has recently co-authored two books. He is an elected Member of the US National Academy of Engineering and a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.
