Professor R.S. Ruoff invited to Jinyun Forum

Professor R.S. Ruoff, a world-level master in material delivers a keynote speech at the Jinyun Forum held on the afternoon of January 27, 2018. The Forum is held at Nanshan Academy of Chongqing Technology and Business University. Zhang Yan, director of Chongqing Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs, attends the Forum and delivers a welcome speech. Liu Ganxin, deputy director of the Department of Science and Technology of CQU, and secretary general of Association for Science and Technology of CQU, presides over the Forum.

Professor Rodney S. Ruoff from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology delivers two speeches, respectively titled “progress in grapheme and its derivatives” and “Think like a China ” upon invitation. More than 70 students and teachers from Chongqing  University, Sichuan University, Chongqing Technology and Business University, the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing Jiaotong University and Chongqing   University of Science & Technology are all present at the event.

Professor Ruoff is a specially appointed professor from the School of Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering, UNIST, and the director of Multi-dimension Material Research Center (CMCM). Professor Ruoff has made considerable achievements in the carbon material area, and has also made noticeable contributions to areas such as grapheme and diamond. He has published 16 papers on Science and Nature.

As for the latest research progress in preparation of grapheme, Professor Ruoff emphatically introduced the latest research findings on growth of high-quality large-area grapheme on copper-nickel alloy of naked crystal face, and proposed the possibility of utilizing the metal-carbon action to convert the grapheme film on the metal foil into diamond film.

After that, Ruoff shared with the audience how he had managed to make such high-standard scientific research achievements. He stressed that when it comes to scientific research, we need to “think like a child”, and think about the most essential reason and seek for the simplest solution. Ruoff adds that we cannot call any experiment a failure, even if it fails to reach the expected result. This is because we could learn something from the experiment anyway, and we are making progress this way.

The speeches lasted for nearly 2 hours. In his speech, with witty wording and vivid body movements, Professor Ruoff discussed rigorous and professional scientific issues. To inspire the audience to think about the change of CH4 when in contact with high-temperature medal, Professor Ruoff compared his belly to carbon and his four limbs as hydrogen. In a while he waved his two arms and walked towards the table, which he assimilated to the high-temperature medal. “I’m now approaching the medal and it’s so hot. What’s happening to me?” His humor has won warm applause and laughter from the audience. Upon completion of the speech, the students present discussed and communicated heatedly with Professor Ruoff with respect to the content of the speech.

This Forum does not serve as a platform for the attendants to get to know the latest updates on the grapheme research area, but is also where they could discuss and communicate with world-class masters in grapheme material, and get further understanding of the process and approaches of scientific research. It encourages the scientific researchers in colleges and universities of Chongqing to probe further into the compounding and preparation of materials.
