Professor Luo Sangui, dean of the School  of Arts, adds that we can not isolate arts from production. Interdisciplinary development will be the highlight of the School in the future as it helps with combination of arts and technology. The School will concentrate efforts on this for the long run.

Starry Sky – Product design for future city and life with Chinese characteristics

As for the “Starry Sky” series, the product design majors are responsible for concept design, automation majors are responsible for design of core programs, and software engineering majors are responsible for software and AR development. It aims to build an IP ecological system with independent copyright that integrates basic necessities of life for the future.

The remote space medical surgery robot with simple functional forms designed by Yang Yuchen, a student majoring in industrial design of Chongqing University, grabs the attention of many visitors. When talking about the reason he has created the space surgery instrument with precision higher than artificial surgery, that can be used in the outer space and integrate big data and artificial intelligence, Yang indicates that he got to know similar projects in his internship period and what’s more important the artificial operation precision varies greatly in the medical care area, and the process is subject to a number of external interfering factors. He has always wanted to build a piece of surgery instrument based on artificial intelligence and big data to ensure high precision for surgery and make surgery process assured. Yang adds that he has encountered a number of technical difficulties in the course of design. With assistance of students from the School of Big Data and Software Engineering and the School  of Automation, those difficulties were overcome. Furthermore, the appearance of the surgery instrument was designed based on phoenix, a creature that exists in the Chinese ancient myths. It demonstrates the Chinese characteristics of the product.

Coincidentally, Xu Ying, a student majoring in product design, also has laid her focus on the social reality. Xu has designed an intelligent child attending robot. When talking about her initial intention of the design, Xu says that currently most of the families in the society are dominated by those born in the 1980s and 1990s, and the parents are often busy at their work and have very little time attending their children. As a result, the children have to stay at home alone. To safeguard those lonely children and allow them to have fun like their parents at home, Xu has designed the future intelligent child attending robot with simple and good-looking appearance and integrating functions such as monitoring, riding, attending and early education. What’s more, as part of the product design, the students majoring in animation have designed an album of paintings of the Chinese New Year dolls with the 24 solar terms as the theme. In this way, the intelligent attending robot with Chinese characteristics is perfectly fitted into the daily family life.

The “Starry Sky” themed moon series reflect the conceptualized design of “future”. The intelligent exploration tool kit and intelligent multi-function detector respectively developed by Deng Birou, a product design major, and Qin Danfeng, a software major, have also drawn extensive attention. Those products can be used in extreme conditions to detect survival environment and provide necessary supplies for pathfinders. What makes them different from traditional detectors is that the two products lay much emphasis on the psychological experience of users and interaction between them. They would consider the emotional condition of users in a strange environment and are therefore compassionate, user-friendly and intelligent. When mentioning the difficulties they have encountered in design process, Deng says that the coordination between the outer part and the core part was quite difficult. In another word, it is not easy to have a good-looking appearance and satisfactory functionality at the same time. In this process, the students from the School of Arts and the School of Big Date and Software Engineering worked together and eventually came to the final solution after many rounds of discussion. The products are a perfect combination of technology and arts and demonstrate the power of interdisciplinary integration. Furthermore, the appearance design of the products is based on the jade hare, a mythological creature in ancient times of China, to spread Chinese elements among the world.

Curing – A product designed to soothe manic depression and cure urban diseases

“The winter of Chongqing is quite depressing. I learned that people tend to suffer seasonal depressive disorder when living in such an environment. So, I was always thinking about how I can solve this problem.” Wang Liqin, a student from the Department of Industrial Design of Chongqing University says. She adds that the seasonal depressive disorder is very subtle and does not draw much attention. However, considering the high incidence of depressive disorder, she really wanted to do something to stop it before it went rampant. This is why she has created the light and shadow awaking machine. After long-time investigation, Wang found that light and shadow would impact our emotions and she tried to simulate sunshine and blue light to adjust the indoor atmosphere. To facilitate operation, Wang worked with the students of the School of Big Date and Software Engineering and developed the mobile software named Rainbow. In particular, the evaluation of personal data is realized based on the professional knowledge of big data and aims to provide individualized services for users. Wang adds that she got to know programming and learned a number of data analyzing techniques by being a part of the Joint Graduation Design Project.

To mitigate the emptiness and confusion of people in modern times that are growing with development of social software in this complicated network environment, Zhong Haijing, a student of the Department of Product Design of Chongqing University, has designed the single-channel affective interaction software named “Listen and Speak”. Zhong says that what makes the chat software special is that there is no object and the user does not need to worry about what they say would be heard by others. To match the simplicity of the software, Zhong Haijing has designed the display board with many paper cups that form a curtain. She also invited students and teachers to try the software as a way of promotion.

Reality – Products designed to solve social problems such as empty-nest elderly, children and targeted poverty reduction

At the Exhibition, a series of medical assistance products have drawn attention of visitors. In particular, after learning through online survey that the incidence of breast cancer in China is quite high and many patients are in the middle and advanced stages when diagnosed due to the lagging-behind testing technology, and as inspired by the cases of breast disease patients she knows, Ren Xiaokang, a student majoring in product design of Chongqing University, has designed a contact-type breast cancer detection device that is used for early detection of hyperplasia of mammary glands and prevention of cancer growth. Based on the internet system sensing layer with artificial intelligence and cloud computation as the core and the rich experience of Professor Liu from China Medical University as a doctor, Ren has developed an early breast cancer detector particularly for Asian females. She adds that she will continue to improve the appearance of the product and make it more suitable for family use and medical use. Then she will launch it in the market, in an effort to reduce the incidence rate of breast cancer.
