CQU students win second prize in Global Grand Challenges Summit

 

Recently, the Fourth Global Grand Challenges Summit co-sponsored by Chinese Academy of Engineering, Royal Academy of Engineering of the UK and National Academy of Engineering of the USA was being held in London, the UK. A delegation of China participated in the Summit as led by Zhou Ji, honorary chairman of the Presidium of Chinese Academy of Engineering. About 900 people, including academicians, experts and entrepreneurs of China, the UK and the USA, attended the Summit.



Selection of members of the team of Chongqing University was organized by the Youth League Committee of Chongqing University. After three months of university-wide competition, the team composed of Yuan Suqin, a student of 2018 from the School of Computer Science, Ge Guangchen, a student of 2017 from the School of Material Science and Engineering, and Song Peiheng and Huang Yugeng, students of 2016 from the School of Mechanical Engineering, guided by Professor Zhang Yuxin from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, was recommended to participate on behalf of Chongqing University.



In the Collaborative Lab Competition part of the Summit, 100 students from China, the UK and the USA were grouped into 50 teams in a mixed manner to use their creative ideas and propose innovative tools to tackle major challenges on site. Yuan Suqin was grouped into the “Green Gut” Team, which was among the global top four teams in terms of proposal, ranking the 3rd place together with another team. The Team was presented with the Winner medal by John Zara, chairman of the Summit and a Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering. Furthermore, the teams of Ge Guangchen, Song Peiheng and Huang Yugeng also made it to the top 10.



In the Student Competition part, under the guidance of Professor Zhang Yuxin, as one of the 15 participating teams of the world (five in China), it competed and exchanged ideas with world-class universities such as Cambridge University, Dartmouth College, University of California, San Diego, etc., and was highly recognized by universities at home and abroad.



It is reported that the first three sessions of the Global Grand Challenges Summit were held in London, Beijing and Washington in 2013, 2015 and 2017 respectively, every two years. The theme of this Session was "Engineering in an Unpredictable World". The discussion focused on 14 major engineering science and technology challenges faced by human beings in the 21st Century, and its purpose was to inspire the young generation to devote themselves to the cause of engineering science and technology, and tackle major global challenges through engineering methods.
