CQU library offers remote book-borrowing services amid pandemic: CCTV

On April 23, Yang Xinya, Curator of the Library of Chongqing University, told the story of the “You Choose and I’ll Pay” remote book-borrowing services offered by the Library after outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in an interview with the journalist of CCTV News Channel interviewed.

Yang Xinya told CCTV that in order to ensure teachers and students have access to paper books during the outbreak, the Library of Chongqing University started on March 9 to offer the “non-contact appointment and borrowing of paper books” to students and teachers of CQU. All students and teachers are now able to search for the desired books on the homepage of the Library and send the information and their personal information to the public email of the Library. Then workers of the Library will find the books for them and complete the borrowing formalities before advising the applicant to collect the books at the designated location. If they can’t come to the university campus to collect the books, the Library will post the books to the borrower, who will pay the freight. In addition, Chongqing University has restored the “Huicai JD.COM book purchasing platform” services, through which the readers may order books unavailable at the Library from JD.COM. Then the JD Express will deliver the order books to the readers.

The “Fighting Pandemic Series Online Exhibition” of the Library of Chongqing University was officially released on April 22, in an effort to enrich the “+Collection” multimedia digital resources of the Library of Chongqing University, record the memory of the University, dig its culture and inherit its spirit. Since March, CQU Library has been soliciting real objects and materials related to the “fight against the coronavirus”. In the past more than 1 month, the Library has received more than 4,700 entries of video records from various sectors of the society. CQU Library offering pairing assistance to universities in Wuhan

As an effort to promote the tradition of helping and supporting others in hard times observed by the university libraries and protect the health of library workers in Wuhan, and in response to the call of the Steering Committee of Library Intelligence Work in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, the Library of Chongqing University offered pairing assistance to the libraries of the three universities and colleges in Wuhan, including Zhixing Colleges of Hubei University, Wuchang Shouyi University and the School of Business and Law, Hubei University of Economics. According to the actual needs of the three libraries, the Library of CQU respectively dispatched the pandemic prevention supplies on March 25 and April 9. The first batch of supplies includes 1,400 disposable medical surgical masks, 67 boxes of alcohol prep pads and 2,700 disposable gloves. The receiving libraries expressed their heartfelt thanks to the Library of CQU, which will continue to send the remaining supplies depending on their actual needs and carry on with the paring assistance.

In addition, during the period when the Library of CQU is shutdown, it has managed to guarantee the timelines of digital resource updating using the network platform. Totally 46 batches of digital literature, including 2,122,284 articles, were updated within only half a month. The total number of articles updated reached 211,836,342.

The caring services are offered by Chongqing University to keep book-loving students busy. According to statistics, in the half month following onset of the pandemic, 3,091 users visited the website of the Library for 167,585 times. Among those users, postgraduate students accounted for the largest proportion, contributing 25,039 views, which is 15% of the total views. Downloads of digital literature reached 37,559, with per capita downloads of 31.12. Specifically, the top 3 disciplines are respectively architecture, pedagogy and business administration. Even during the Chinese Spring Festival, the views remained the same as those in other holidays.
