Guangming Daily reported the innovation and entrepreneurship journey of CQU's "Silicon Doped Fertilizer" project team

The 2022 National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week themed on "innovation drives vitality and entrepreneurship creates employment" kicked off from September 15 to 21. In the spectacular tide of "innovation and entrepreneurship", a galaxy of "extraordinary youth teams" was particularly remarkable.

On August 15, 2017, the Secretary-General Xi Jinping wrote back to the students participating in the "Youth Dream Trip" of the 3rd China College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and kindly encouraged them, "We hope you can take root in China to understand the national conditions and public feelings, improve wisdom and abilities in innovation and entrepreneurship, temper willpower through hard struggle, realize the value of life in the great struggle of hundreds of millions of people to make the Chinese dream to come true, and compose glorious chapters worthy of the times and history with youth". In the past five years, a large number of young people of the new era have conducted field investigations in every corner of China, devoted themselves wholeheartedly to innovation and entrepreneurship, striven to serve rural revitalization with unique technology, intelligence, culture and other resources, and spread out "thriving scenes of rural areas".

Let's approach CQU's "Silicon Doped Fertilizer-pioneer of new bio-silicon fertilizer" project, to feel the sonorous steps in innovation journey of China and appreciate the fervent feelings of youth students.

"Silicon Doped Fertilizer" project achieved the "goal" of increasing yield

Narrator: Li Kailin, leader of CQU's "Silicon Doped Fertilizer---pioneer of new bio-silicon fertilizer" project and doctoral student of School of Materials Science and Engineering

Since the summer of this year, the Yangtze River Basin has suffered from severe meteorological drought. Standing the test of the "scorching weather", the "Silicon Doped Fertilizer" project team handed over a perfect result---in the experimental field of Liangping District, Chongqing, the fertilized rice maintained a good growth trend despite the continuous high temperature. According to the calculation, the yield of rice fertilized with "1# Silicon Doped Fertilizer" will steadily increase by 10%, boosting a growth in output value for 30% and comprehensive income of rice farmers for 10%. In this extreme climate, we scored victories at the "first battle defending bumper harvest" in this extreme climate.

Ten years ago, when I followed my instructor to carry out innovative practice as an undergraduate student, I accidentally discovered that diatom composites have the potential to develop new silicon fertilizers. After thousands of experiments over 5 years, my team and I finally overcame the technical difficulties in the preparation of modified diatom composites. However, before having time to celebrate, we found a new difficulty: applying fertilizer with modified diatomite powder has the effect of remediating soil, but can't increase yield.

What should we do? Continue with exploration and research. In the following five years, we continued to explore, broke through the technical bottleneck, built and improved the "silicon triangle" technical system that could realize the integration of yield increase and remediation and pioneered a new diatom-based silicon fertilizer-"1# Silicon Doped Fertilizer" in the world.

We have been adhering to the concept that good technical achievements should be used as soon as possible. I took the research team back to rural areas for supporting agriculture and helping farmers. We were stationed in the fields of the agricultural base in Liangping District twice a month, giving technical guidance to the farmers. At present, our team has received strong support from five platforms, such as the New Diatom Materials Research Center of Chongqing University, and conducted 25 agricultural technical trainings, helping more than 600 farmers and training 120 agricultural technical backbones. It was found from the experiments in the application demonstration base of Liangping District that the average growth rate of rice yield reached 8% and the comprehensive income of farmers increased by 10%. We also cooperated with Longpu Grapefruit Cooperative in Liangping District to build an industry-university-research application demonstration base of more than 1,000 mu, which increased the yield of grapefruit by 9%. In Chongqing High-tech Industrial Development Zone, we also conducted a small-scale experimental planting of vegetables in a greenhouse of 23.5 mu, and the adsorption of heavy metals in the soil reached 70%, with remarkable results.

In the future, we will keep deepening our research, strengthen the product, continue to expand the application of Silicon Doped Fertilizer, and entirely achieve the "goal" of harvest and yield improvement.
